The Department of Al-Quran and Islamic Studies is as old as the Islamic University, Bangladesh, Kushtia. It opened when the University started its academic function on 1984-85. Dr. Taher Ahmed , a distinguished Islamic scholar was the founding teacher of the department. In the begining, it was named Department of Al-Quran and Ulomul Quran. In 1990 its name has been changed as it is now.
The Department offers a four year BTIS Honours, a one year MTIS, a tow year M.Phil and a three year Ph.D. programmEs. From its inception it has contributed significantly towards education and culture as well as to the defferent sectors at the national and international levels. Through the years, from this department notable Islamic thinkers, intellectuals and social reformers have made remarkable contributions in a wide range of fields.
The department provides an excellent seminar library and a computer lab facilities. Beside this the department has contributed a half-yearly peer- reviewed journal (The Quranic studies) of scholarly articles, book reviews, interviews and creative pices of research works. The journal invites contributions by teachers, alumni and current students of this department. And a Al-Quran research centre has been formed to function as a wing of the department.
The department provides facilities to carry out advanced in introduction to the Quranic sciences, Classical and modern Tafsirs, Al-hadith & its sciences, Islamic History & Culture, comparative study of Religions, Islamic economics, public administration, computer Science & Technology, Arabic language, Muslim philosophy, Islamic studies and research methodology.
