Welcome to the Department of Social Welfare, Islamic University, Kushtia-7003, Bangladesh. Serving as the Head of the Department of Social Welfare is an honor, a pleasure, and a passion. The department of social welfare started its journey with three faculty members since 2018.
Social Welfare was created on the day when society was created. The history of social welfare is as ancient as human civilization. Social Welfare is the overall welfare of the society or the masses. Social Welfare is the sum of some social efforts, arrangements, methods or organized activities through which the welfare of the society is provided. The motto of social welfare is “Service to the humanity is the way to reach the almighty.” Social Welfare/work is engaged in the overall welfare of the society by developing the ability to play the social role of the individual and developing latent talents. Social Welfare/work aims at the well-being and improvement of the life of individuals in general, and alleviation of the sufferings and amelioration of the lot of the destitute, deprived, disadvantaged and under-privileged sections of society in particular. Its main concern is to diagnose the social problems, identify social inequities and social injustice and to resolve and redress them.
Currently the Department of Social Welfare has both graduate and undergraduate programs. Undergraduate program is called Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) in Social Welfare which has 4 batches with 300 students. The BSS curriculum in Social Welfare program is comprised with 140 credit hours spanned in 8th semesters. The department aims at proving quality social work education. The goal of social work education at the department is to prepare students to make a difference in people's lives, particularly in disadvantaged and disempowered communities. Social Work is practice base profession. Students develop the theoretical understanding received in the classroom and practice it in the field at the individual, group, and community level.
As the Head of the department, I believe that the students have a meaningful academic experience with us and that they will be able to make major contributions to the social, economic, and political transformations that are necessary to create a sustainable society. I firmly believe that now is the time for all of us to collaborate at all levels to change misconception of social welfare and elevate professional status in order to build a peaceful, dignified, and successful society. We provide a variety of possibilities and suitable assistance to the young students who enter our program and make them self-sufficient, responsible, and mature citizens.
